The detestable little Belgie!

13 Nov
Poirot

tonight on British television and iconic character of a well loved series will come to a dramatic conclusion; Curtain Poirots Last Case will be televised, David Suchet is the only actor to have portrayed Poirot in every single story that Agatha Christie wrote including the little known play. When Christine began writing Poirot she already saw him as and elderly gentleman she had no idea the character would become so popular, over time she grew to dislike him calling him detestable, bombastic, tiresome, egocentric little creep.

Down the years I have collected and read nearly all of Agatha Christie’s work, knowing the plot of this final case has made the expectation of the televised dramatisation all the more sad because I know how it ends. It will be like saying farewell to a friend, even though many channels transmit repeats frequently.

Suchet has done a remarkable job maintaining the continuity of the character he began back in 1989, like Christine herself, he had no idea that this character would become a cornerstone of his career for so many years.  I love the quirks and eccentricity of this dapper gentleman that Suchet has brought forward with such tender care.  I particularly love how you can insult Poirot in so many ways and he never takes offence unless you call him a Frenchie!

Peter Ustinov’s film portrayal brought Poirot and Agatha Christie to my attention, igniting an intrigue and thirst to read more. I still enjoy his films. Suchet has endeared me to him all the more.

Farewell my Belgian Beau, and thank you Mr Suchet.

I well remember looking forward to the first TV appearance, for some reason I took an instant dislike to the character and yet have liked Suchet in many other things, didn’t watch the first to the end and have never watched it since. Possibly I should have given it another try. Too many things to do in the 90s.
