Rebellious technology

06 Apr

Life has a way of making you pay for time off.  I’m paying a price, in frustration!

Wednesday morning I sat and woke up my computer, it had had a holiday too. After dealing with a top priority necessity I clicked to install the update, during its restart process it got stuck, trying to locate my Bluetooth keyboard (I don’t have one). It couldn’t sense my plugged in one. Panic.  Grab the iPad and ask Google, the first two ‘try this’ options failed, one was to just turn off the Bluetooth which was incredibly unhelpful as I do have a wireless mouse. Panic rising, scan read a couple more articles and discovered that either plugging the keyboard into a USB extension or plugging a thumb drive into the USB ports on the keyboard can ‘wake things up’.  Thankfully the extension trick worked. Phew.

Most work days my BFF calls to chat during her walk home, I sat waiting for the phone to jingle into life and when it did I eagerly pressed the green button – to silence. At first I thought our phones had missed connecting, but I could hear the bedroom phone ringing, I looked at the screen and it was blank. Panic. I heard my answerphone click in and the phone screen came to life and I pressed the green button with authority to hear the dulcet tones of my BFF wondering what was going on. Phew.

My wizzy super new desk chair requires recharging from time to time. On Wednesday I dug out the charger and plugged it into the socket and plugging the chair into the charger, the indicator light looked dead (yes, I had switched it on). Hmm, maybe it goes green once its charged. After a couple of hours still no light, I’ll plug it in again Thursday to charge some more, but still the light remained dead. Panic.  Now where exactly is that ‘safe place’ you put the instructions?   Apparently the light ‘should’ be yellow while charging and green once charged.  So, is the charger not charging or has the light gone do-wacky….either way as its only been three months, I need to contact the peeps and get another charger, hope there’s enough charge in the battery. Slight panic.

At least the microwave hasn’t melted, no light bulbs have plunged me into darkness or kettle fizzled ….. although the WordPress app has crashed a few times while typing this.

Yeap, his nibs is having a sulk, lol. So long as Major Murphy doesn’t stick his hooter in with getting a replacement charger, I’ll manage. 🙂

    1. What is a thumb drive?
    2. Why does a USB keyboard interfere, or, perhaps, generate blue-tooth error messages?

I have used both USB and blue-tooth keyboards at different times with the same Apple computer, especially, if I have run out of batteries for the dedicated blue-tooth keyboard. Generics might misbehave with the system, however, I can’t be certain of that.

It also sounds like you have a sync. misalignment with the phone + I.T equipment. I like my devices to sync as well. I had a similar experience to yours quite a while ago. I eventually sought guidance. I do wonder if I would remember what to search for it it all went belly up again.

I had WP dance a couple of tangos on me the other day, too. It really frustrated me, I created the post twice, nearly lost it a third. My post title showed some interesting unintelligible language, evidencing it. I shan’t try to correct it, now that it’s settled together with gobbledygook, let it stay that way. I wonder if some background work was at play, or something more nefarious……

Do you have to charge up your chariot when you are not using it?

Glad to hear the microwave is doing what you expect it to.

What a sequence of palavers you’ve had!

    xxx

Apparently it is something to do with the power used to run the keyboard. After the update as the keyboard uses such little power the Mac failed to notice it was plugged in and automatically started searching for a Bluetooth keyboard instead, however you cannot tell it to stop searching and are stuck in a loop. By plugging in a USB extension or plugging in the thumb/flash drive/stick into the USB ports on the keyboard, as this uses more power, the Mac wakes up to the keyboard being plugged in.

The home phone issue is probably down to age and use. Today the handset refused to let me answer a call, but it did later allow me to hear the answer phone message left. Time for a new landline phone.

As for WordPress, I frequently get on intelligible language in the post title when I use a special character such as the &, this probably has something to do with coding as that symbol can be used in HTML.

Today my six-year-old iPad has been crashing frequently on several of its apps. Maybe it is Apple telling me it is time to renew but I am stubborn and won’t just yet.

Forgot to add that chair charger might be a socket issue after all 🙄

Your ipad is not so old that it cannot work, however, it may have issues talking to and connecting newer IOS features. I am totally tired of updates that conflict with a settled system arrangement. some of the updates are not worth pursuing till they have been updated themselves umpteen times. I now have a system that will restore me to my previous set up reasonably easily, should updates play up.

Personally, I think it is disgrace that your USB keyboard has to have workarounds to operate because of updates. A strongly worded contact with Apple would not be out of order.

What a nonsense ! It’s not clever. You are the only clever element in this scenario.

        Xx

My iPad does not update anymore, it’s too old (according to Apple). It’s a late gen-2 model. I did the good old trusted, turn it off and on again 😉

I have ‘t tried direct plugging in the keyboard yet, the extension cable is working fine.

Sure I understand that your ipad won’t update, therefore cannot sing and dance in the same way as more recent models. Nevertheless, unless you want to purchase another model, your soft and hard re-set is still what works for most basic issues even on the newer models.

I can’t just pop into one of the Apple shops because of where I am, you would have a similar issue for other reasons. Telephone assistance is the luck of the draw, and has left me even more frustrated than I was when i started. Other times – after a bit of a run around usually, it has been of assistance. Then again, I would rather have the possibility to seek advice rather than not, which is the case with most other providers.

You are really very good with I.T and it sounds like you have infinite patience. Have you got computer studies under your belt?

Hope you get the seat power working soon.

No knowledge really, just experience, Google and some logic.

Blimey, what a chain of frustrations! You work your way through the panics with remarkable good sense. Do hope you can get the chair sorted sooner than soonest – that really is vital. Hugs xx
