Firstly a little back ground. I have a serious spinal lordosis, most people’s lumbar region is sort of ( where as mine is more like
Historically, I telephoned the department and made an appointment and everything was smooth and easy.
The system has changed.
Now I have to contact my GP, Reception will not make an appointment as it is non-essential I either leave a message [line only available between 8am and 11am Monday-Friday] or write a letter making the request. If my GP is away on a jolly, golfing, with his private clinic, off training etc it waits for his return, no other GP can do it.
GP, who has ever met me nor spoken to me, then assesses need and makes referral [in writing] to Orthotics Department, who then make an appointment and send out a letter confirming this. This has to be done EVERYTIME I need to contact them, whether it is for a new brace [once a year] or for an existing brave to be repaired [stitching give way] or the velcro replaced, which is two or three times a year.
So instead of getting something sorted in the middle of May with one phone call. It took one call to GP’s, one call to GP’s message line [to be told he was away], one letter to GP ready for his return from jolly in two weeks. Time it takes GP to action said letter and make contact with Hospital. Hospital to action request and send out appointment. The next available appointments will be beginning of July, a new brace will take a month to be ordered, made and delivered for another appointment to be fitted; if it is sent back for alteration that is another month. My space brace needs restitching and revelcroing.
I hope this brace, just back from being repaired hangs on until the new one or repaired one is ready.
And then ….. then they kvetch at me for not laundering it thoroughly!! I tried giving it a wash while I was in the shower but it didn’t work. Seeing as it takes three days to dry out [cannot be dried in a dryer] I cannot be upright without wearing one.
A three weeks from start to finish is now a three month battle to and fro, which I have the privilege of paying for!
