Crochet-ey Doo-Dah-Dayz

Since last October I’ve been tackling a bit of crochet.  I never was a knitter, my Mum was avid at it during the winter months and since my hands and wrists have detriorated it is even worse, but I thought I could wangle a way to crochet [after watching my best bud stitch away til steam was coming off].  In an afternoon she taught me the basic stitches and introduced me to the wonders of YouTube videos especially those by “Crochet Geek”.

An overseas pal who is a foster mum to poorly abandoned dogs asked me if I could make a few items for the charity’s twice-annual fund raising auction, so I have been working on these scarves and headbands for her.

My best bud when she came for a weekend visit in January brought a suitcase load of wool with her, with the idea of us making a friendship blanket out of multi-coloured granny squares.  I did the maths and hit upon 12 rows of 18 squares, so 24 stacks of 9 squares, a total of 216 squares.

She whizzed along in two days comleting around a dozen or so stacks of squares while I slowly trailed along.  She left the wool with me [chuckling as she went] and I continued to make the squares until we had enough.

During her visit last month [when she turned up with a second case full of wool] we started attaching all the squares together.  Believe me, there are some time consuming tedious tasks in life but attaching squares has to be a front runner.  By the time she had to leave [snickering again as sadly the two cases of wool had to stay here] we had 18 strips stitched together and about half a dozen strips sewn together, she was going to sew the rest together and do a final frame go around.

When you start a creative project you wonder how the finished item might look, wonder whether it will match your minds eye, reflect the hard work and have something of a ‘wow’ factor from others that slightly buffs ones pride.
