I LOVE this film, this would be my choice desert island disc style. I watch it at least twice a year and it still makes me laugh, cry and enjoy.
The premise is of a seventies rock band Strange Fruit, they had everything that makes a legendary rock band: Money, Fame, Success, Groupies, a Singer who died of drugs and even a divine ending, when lightning struck the stage during an open-air festival. Twenty years on and all but one has departed the music industry for mundane lives, although Beano thinks he is hiding out from the Inland Revenue. When the idea of reforming for a reunion gig at the famed festival where it all exploded before they prepare to recapture that buzz of heady life, but discover the same old arguments and antagonism of before.
Does it all come right in the end …???
This impressive cast names, Stephen Rea, Billy Connolly, Jimmy Nail, Timothy Spall, Bill Nighy, Juliet Aubrey draw us into the hopes and lives of their characters, the idiosyncrasies of life. When a fan sees their teen idol years later while holidaying somewhere warm, they assume they are still living the luxury when in reality they are a condom machine engineer. The grappling with technology, there is a fantastic scene where “Ray” is just trying to change the tv channel as is frantically pressing buttons on numerous remotes, causing the stereo to blare the curtains to open, the tv to switch erratically.
I bet if you are musically inclined that after watching this movie, you too will be playing the tour bus game
